Q/A

Q: What are your credentials?
A: I hold degrees in Vocal Performance from Boston University and The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. I’m also a professional singer who maintains a busy performance schedule.

Q: I’ve never taken voice lessons before. What is a typical voice lesson like?
A: Every voice lesson starts with a warm-up which can last a few minutes or more. After the warm-up, I’ll guide you through a series of vocal exercises designed to build good vocal technique. Once we’ve finished the vocal exercises, we’ll start working on your assigned songs, chosen by me to help you with specific aspects of vocal technique. Your lesson will end with a quick discussion of practice goals for the upcoming week, and then you’ll be on your way.

Q: OK, but what is ‘vocal technique?’
A: Vocal technique refers to a set of skills that a singer uses to sing successfully. These skills are acquired trough private study and practice. They include things like breath support, tone quality, vowel formation, etc. Basically, good vocal technique equals good singing.

Q: How long before I see improvement?
A: First, it depends entirely on how much work you are willing to do outside of your lessons. I’ll probably only see you once a week, so practice is crucial. Second, it takes a while to train a voice. After all, you’re training muscles and changing habits. But with practice and study, you will reach your goals.

Q: Do you teach all types of singing?
A: I teach classical, musical theater, jazz and some contemporary.

Q: Can you help me prepare my NYSSMA solo?
A: Yes. the Long Island Voice Studio has helped students prepare for NYSSMA in the past, and with good results. I can help you pick a piece, learn the notes, pronounce any foreign language, sing the style and feel confident performing in front of a judge.

Q: What about sight-singing?
A: LIVS offer’s sight-singing instruction that will teach you how to identify key signatures and time signature, recognize the tonic note of a key, distinguish between different note values and rhythms, sing using solfège (Do Re Mi…) and identify and sing intervals. LIVS also offers practice exercises designed to help students prepare for the sight-singing portion of NYSSMA.

Q: Can I hear you sing?
A: Sure. I sing at every lesson. If you decide to take lessons, you’ll be hearing me sing a lot. Or you can visit my website and click “Audio” to hear some of my recorded performances.
